The Power of Play and Imagination to Transform Learning

This is Bill Derry! Very wacky and interesting librarian. He is full of energy and bright ideas...literally just look at his hat! He is a strong believer that Play is a necessity for both Children and Adults.

He claims that we are in the Imagination Age! At the moment Maker Fairs are a big hit, people are anxious, want opportunities for play, to create, and collaborate.

"Play can be defined as the tension between the rules of the game and the freedom to act within those rules".

"We are all makers"! "We are all players"! "We are all Imagineers"! "We are all Creative"!

“The opposite of play is not work, it is depression”    -Brian Sutton-Smith

“Play is how we are made, how we develop and adjust to change. Allows people to become innovative." According to Albert Einstein, “Logic will get you A to Z, imagination will get you everywhere.”

Bill highly recommend watching Peter Gray’s TED Talk.

Maker Space provides a place for people to Play, be Imaginative, be Creative all in one package.

Why do some people oppose play?
  •          No path
  •          Time consuming
  •          Abnormal

As reference librarians “we use to help people answer questions, now we have to help them ask the right questions".

Libraries are great imagination foundations.

  1. I agree that play is not just essential for kids; it can be an important source of relaxation and stimulation for adults as well.
